When to Choose Between Perfection and Efficiency

Man, was I struggling...

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Before starting my own business, I worked for a few corporate companies in the industry taking on a variety of roles. I was a graphic designer in marketing, an illustrator for clothing, a production artist for room decor, and a packaging designer for beauty products! But, no matter what my role was, there was always one aspect of the job that seemed to follow me around.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I could 👏🏻 not 👏🏻 seem to strike a balance between perfection and efficiency. I was usually falling into the efficiency category because of the fast-paced nature of the companies I worked for. The stress of each deadline had me stuck in efficiency mode.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

On the other hand, my manager was stuck in perfection mode and I had no idea how! It wasn’t until we discussed this difference that we both really found that balance.

(If you struggle with this, too, go ahead and save this for later)

I was able to assess each situation as it came and find time to ✨take my time✨ while she was able to identify when she was taking too much time focusing on minor details that didn’t add value to the project.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We both moved through the preliminary phase of sketches and concepts quickly and effectively so that we had more time to make the final great. We focused on getting the idea across rather than showing exactly what each version would look like.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It was a great system and I still use it today. My 3 guidelines have served me well no matter the job or client and I hope they’ve helped at least one of you today!
